Big, Vol. 3, No. 3, July 1964

Item ID....M04366

Synopsis

A vintage gay magazine, minus the full frontal nudity.

One exercise/physical culture feature, with pictures of boys, yes, prepubescent boys, wearing almost nothing, posing and doing exercises so they can get a head start in developing physiques like Jim Stryker or Jim Stark. The article advocates rowing and bouncing (what type of bouncing; potential fantasy material, given the pictures?) as aids to developing the classic V-shaped torso.

Review

A vintage gay magazine, minus the full frontal nudity.

One exercise/physical culture feature, with pictures of boys, yes, prepubescent boys, wearing almost nothing, posing and doing exercises so they can get a head start in developing physiques like Jim Stryker or Jim Stark. The article advocates rowing and bouncing (what type of bouncing; potential fantasy material, given the pictures?) as aids to developing the classic V-shaped torso. Note the reference is to "stars" of the homoerotic physique magazines, not "straight" icons like Steve Reeves or the current Mr. America. And a boy wearing a thong posing by a horse isn't exactly a how to ride a horse aid.

The emphasis in this issue seems to be youth, lean, more twinkie types, with, as noted above, an innuendo of "rough" activity, which usually ends up looking campy.

Walt Covert shows off a young pristine ass and poses rather affectedly in a Tarzanesque leopard print get-up. Doug Marshall is touted as having the "perfect shape for high-fashion modeling." Chuck and Emilio pose in somewhat campy Native American get-up. Young Noel Peters poses bathing outside; his arms are muscled, but not overtly so, his waist is thin, and his jaw is defined. Bruce MacNeill poses supine in his thong, the shape of the cock clear beneath it. One of the models, Dave Woodward, is a lifeguard on Lake Michigan (which beach in the 60s was the most popular for gays? Oak Street?).

The emphasis throughout is on the youth and on the large baskets beneath the thongs and underwear. This issue contains scenes from two movies, Texas Strangers and Hold-up on the Rio Grande. Basically, hot young studs wearing almost nothing or nothing (see the pictures from the latter title, which look like foreplay for rough sex) and cowboy boots. One blond beach California stud type, Ernie Mathews, who also appears in color on the front and back covers, is holding what looks like a whip. Duane Nolan poses in jeans, thick funky belt and leather wristband; he likes, according to the copy, to "rough it up" outside.

The color centerfold is rugged type Boyd Goddard, posing in colored underwear (a quite large package) and cowboy boots. His musculature is lean and natural rather than the mountainous bulges of bodybuilding types, indicating a trend toward that look in these magazines and in the popular culture.
