Review
A classic issue of this groundbreaking publication, which dared to openly explore not just gay sexuality, but fetish and S/M in an era when these subjects were still considered taboo. Chuck Renslow's Kris Studio had been producing risque photos and movies for some time; by 1966, the “kinky†element in his work, and the work of his lover, the famous artist Etienne, becomes even more overt. The magazine still purports to be a physique publication, and calls Etienne a “physique artist,†but the sexuality, especially the “leather†element, really comes to the fore.
“New Boots,†an illustration by Etienne, appears on the inside front cover; two “robust young cyclists†try on new leather gear. Definitely will appeal to the boot fetishists (ah, that feeling of new boots right out of the box ... that scent of boot leather waiting to be broken in ... )
Etienne also gives us a drawing of the homosexual king Edward II in the hands of his captors. His hunky torturer flaunting thick leather spiked gauntlets looks like he wants to do more than torture the young king ... The supposed homophobes who killed the king by inserting a hot poker in his anus look like they are hunky gay leathermen ... Scary!
The coverman, Bud Carlson, fits more with the classic All-American boy look (what a perfect ass).
Carlos supplies drawings of a bare-based sailor and a military guy nearly naked from the waist down (and flaunting boots, of course). M.G., another artist, offers the reader a dreamy image of a biker. Blond buffed Dennis does housework in the nude in the next photospread.
This issue really, as I mentioned above, brings out the S/M element to the fore, in scenes from a Kris Studio movie entitled The Tale of the Jealous Slave. Whipping definitely occurs in this flick, obviously, based on the photos and their captions; “which of the sheik's servants is most deserving of the sting of his wrath?â€
Tall and handsome Bill Ogden of Eagle Studios of Chicago pulls down his tight pants to show of a luscious ass. Larry poses outside in the local forest preserve; his bulge beneath his posing strap is quite prominent. For the by now token physical culture article, Ken Colby shows the reader how to do sit-ups with weights on your feet (and of course he does them nearly nude). And check out the dark and handsome thin-waisted full-lipped stud on the high school tumbling team (and I'm sure he does tumble .. a lot; see pages 35-35).
